Who doesn’t love to watch a bunch of turtle-themed rubber duckies race down the river? The fact that the proceeds when you “adopt” a turtle ensure children in need can get what they need to live a happy and successful life is a total bonus! This is the Teeny Tiny Turtles on the Tar by The Boys and Girls Club of the Tar River Region.

On July 30th, the BGC released 2,000 rubber duckie turtles into the Tar River to race for three cash prizes. The turtles were dropped from the Peachtree Street Bridge at the Rocky Mount Mills Campus, which helped to put the event on. As the turtles raced down the Tar River, the Rocky Mount Fire and Rescue Department offered their services and boats to help move them along and catch them as they crossed the finish line.

Speaking about the finish line, the first three turtles to finish the race won a cash prize for their adopters. And the three winners of the 2022 Teeny Tiny Turtles on the Tar were in 1st place: James Morelli, in 2nd place: Lyn Beuhlr, and in 3rd place: David Rizzo! James Morelli of Morelli Clinard Residential and Commercial Drafting (MCRD) actually donated his winnings back to the BGC in a very generous move. Even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made an appearance.

The goal of this year’s Turtles on the Tar was to get all 2,000 turtles adopted and the BGC absolutely crushed that goal. Upwards of $15,000 were raised between the turtle sales and sponsorships, all of which will benefit over 1,200 families throughout the Tar River community. 2022 also marks the 3rd anniversary of the Teeny Tiny Turtles on the Tar event by the Boys and Girls Club and Rocky Mount Toyota is extremely happy to return as Yellow-Bellied Turtle sponsors this year! Our relationship with the Boys and Girls Club of the Tar River Region runs deep and we encourage everyone to learn more about their mission by visiting their website http://bgctrr.org/. We’re greatly looking forward to next year’s Turtles on the Tar and wish the BGC a fantastic rest of 2022!
