The night of October 26th was one for the books as Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tar River Region members and guests came together to celebrate our 29th Annual Steak & Burger Fundraiser. It was an evening filled with inspiration, gratitude, and the promise of a brighter future for the youth we serve.

We celebrated 35 Club members from our Clubhouses in the Twin Counties. The evening started with club member Addison playing a musical selection from his electronic keyboard. Shortly after guests were greeted by our CEO, Ron Green. As this event is to celebrate our youth, Club members recited the Boys & Girls Club Code, The pledge of allegiance and the invocation.

Following shortly all the guest started their meals. In reference to the event name, Club members enjoyed a steak dinner while donors received burgers. During the dinner, Club member Daniel serenaded the crowd with a piece from his violin. Once the dinner was completed, the guests heard from Zion, a 2023 Youth of the Year Candidate and stellar club member. Zion shared his story of triumph and resilience. He also shared how the Boys & Girls Club helped him get through tough times and now helping him have a plan for the future.

One of the highlights of the evening was an exceptional opportunity for our guests and Club members to gain wisdom from none other than Retired Lieutenant General Leslie C. Smith, an alumnus of the Boys & Girls Club and a member of the Boys & Girls Club Alumni Hall of Fame. General Smith’s presence added a unique layer of significance to the event, making it an unforgettable occasion for all in attendance.

Each year at the fundraiser, a community leader is selected to win the prestigious 2023 Champion for Youth Award. This year Judy Dixon won for being a true champion for the youth in the Twin Counties. At the close of the program, CEO Ron made one last impression as he allowed the guests to become acquainted with each other so that they understood to have a better future it starts with helping our youth and helping each other.
